2004-2005 EASTERN ILLINOIS CHAPTER /DISTINGUISHED BUILDING AWARD RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN
COMMERCIAL
AND RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE HOMEWOOD ILLINOIS, DECEMBER 8, 2004 –The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Eastern Illinois Chapter announced today the recipients of the Distinguished Building Award, The Eastern Illinois Chapter's highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture completed by members of the chapter. Selected from numerous submissions, 4 recipients were recognized at The Eastern Illinois Chapter's Annual Meeting and Award Ceremony, December 5, 2004 at the Flossmoor Country Club in Flossmoor, Illinois. The Eastern Illinois Chapter / Distinguished Building Awards now in its 26th year, was developed to recognize and encourage excellence in the architectural design in the southern collar counties of the Chicago Metro area. The jury was comprised of representatives from the south suburban region architecture community. The jury members included Mark Rupsis, Architect, Rupsis Associates; Frank Mraz, Architect, Lohan Caprile Goettsch architects; and Sharon Wsol, Director, Orland Park Public Library The 2004 Eastern Illinois Chapter / Distinguished Building Award recipients are: Walter E. Smithe Store Renovation, Oak Brook, Illinois | Owner: Walter E. Smithe Architect: Craig A. Podalak Architects, Ltd. Contractor: Victor Construction Co., Inc. A renovation of an existing non-descript facility into a revitalized retail setting. The jury commented that "The architect achieved Owner’s building program requirements very well. He successfully converted undistinguished big box into very attractive, well-planned and welcoming space. The interior stairwell and skylight created beautiful space that achieved Owner’s requirements – open plan, related detailing more inviting and appealing. The detailing very attractive – differences in flooring, interior stair design, and use of stair to move people through space well conceived". |

Hanlon Residence, Chicago, Illinois |

| Owner: Dr. and Mrs. Scott Hanlon Architect: Robert Juris & Associates Architects, Ltd. Contractor: Master Hand Contractors, Inc. The jury stated that "The building fit the urban context and used materials to meet the landmark character. The open space plan on the interior created a grand expression within a moderately sized home. The attention to detail on the exterior extended into the ceiling plane. The rooms were well defined and proportioned". |
City of Ottawa Central Filtration Plant, Ottawa, Illinois 
| | Owner: City of Ottawa Architect: Basalay, Cary & Alstadt, Architects, Ltd. Contractor: Vissering Construction Co. The facility is new water treatment plant addition and a gateway into the City of Ottawa. The jury commented "The building addition was seamlessly integrated with the existing building. The remodel of the existing façade will continue to inspire people entering the town. The material selection for floor and ceiling and use of daylight in the connecting building enhanced the transition from one building to another. |
Dalton Residence, Valparaiso, Indiana 
| | Owner: Dillon and Cara Dalton Architect: Grant Walker Currier Architect Contractor: Wagner Homes The jury stated that "The house’s integration into the site is its strongest feature. Each space seems to take advantage of differing views, and the irregular shapes of the rooms, combined with the placement of windows, allows for a unique interplay of lighting and shadow. The stone work and other choices of materials anchored the building into the site."
